Good Morning Smoothie
The morning is a great time to jump start healthy eating for the day. Our stomachs are empty and ready to receive powerful nutrition. Next to a huge glass of water, I’ve become so accustomed to my green morning shake, that I don’t feel quite right if I skip it. I know I don’t ever eat enough vegetables, despite my best efforts, and my shake is a great way to get tons of greens into my diet. I’ve outlined the basic recipe below with the basic nutritional benefits of each component. There is no correct combination – experiment and try to find one that addresses your needs and pleases your palate. A high powered blender like a Vitamix will yield the most palatable results as it can liquify the fibrous ingredients. Remember to add some healthy fat to keep you feeling full. Enjoy!
Mix and match using the following amounts:
1 cup filtered water
1 cup unsweetened almond, hemp, coconut milk – protein, healthy fat, creamy taste
1+ Handful raw leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, parsley, etc.) – alkalinizing
1 inch raw ginger (peeled) – aids digestion, anti inflammatory
1 tbsp coconut, flax seed, fish oil – healthy fat, anti infalmmatory, keeps you feeling full
1 handful frozen berries (blueberries, strawberries, cherries) – antioxidants
Several chunks pineapple – digestion, anti inflammatory
1/2 banana – healthy carbs, potassium
Peeled, pitted lemon – alkalinizing
* Green Vibrance powder – concentrated vegetable based greens, probiotics
* Vega protein powder – vegetable based protein powder, great after a hard workout
I usually start with 2 cups of liquid, 2 handfuls of greens, 1 cups (total) fruit, 1 inch piece of peeled ginger. We don’t eat nuts at our house but raw almond butter or peanut butter can be used instead of the above listed oils.
* I love Green Vibrance and almost always add it – it’s full of even more greens plus probiotics. I add the protein on days that follow a good weight training workout.
